So far this semester, Art I 6th grade have been studying the Elements and Principles of Design and have even created a book to help them understand and apply the Elements and Principles we use in Art. The next project we did was a paper collage based on Henri Matisse. He use bright, bold colors in his paintings but also when he too began making paper collages. These turned out really well and I can't wait to share in a slide show. The most recent project we have just finished is based on an M.C.Escher print, called Other World, and I have using this project for over twelve years. This is the first time, I have had my 6th graders do it but this group of 6th graders have an overwhelming artistic talent. I knew they would be successful. And they were. I will post pictures over the next couple of weeks because they are really good.
The Art I 7/8 graders have learned about the Elements as well by using the Textbooks and have created One-Point Perspective Road drawings. They now are currently working on Self-Portraits and after they complete a few practice sketches, they will begin using Oil Pastels to color them in. I am thinking that this will not only let them experiment with color but we will tie this into Picasso's Blue Period or Rose period. I think too it will give them a different insight as to what color can do and what color can make us feel. Plus, it's not everyday we get to see ourselves in shades of blue or green. We may feel blue but it usually doesn't show!
Enjoy.
